Why this newsletter?
My interest here is very new compared to the many people doing excellent work, and my expertise on these issues is a lot less than theirs too. I’m more of an outsider looking in. But I hope I can bring a helpful, different set of eyes to things too.
Brentford's game against Manchester United in August 2022 was a memorable day out in more ways than one. Apart from the unexpected great result, it was also played during a punishing heatwave, among the hottest-ever temperatures for a Premier League match. It sparked an interest in knowing more about the connections between football and climate change.
It's not only in watching professional football that I had been noticing changes and impacts. My son's youth team has had many training sessions and matches called off due to extreme weather.
Looking to understand more, I found a lot of reporting on the effects of climate change on football, and the impacts football has on the environment. I saw that fans, players, clubs, and organizations are taking action. But finding that information could be a challenge.
This newsletter seeks out, and shares, the latest news and developments and provides reflections on them. It also brings together handy resources already out there in one place. The balance of content is towards the game in England - as that is where I’m based - but the aim is to be open and global to all content. A lot is happening, but more is needed. By building a greater understanding, I hope this can help contribute to more and better action. All analysis and views in my own posts here do not represent the views of any other organisations I’m involved with.
All feedback is welcome!
